At Sparks Film School Filmmaking Classes, the young film crews have been exploring a new creative theme – Finishing Touches – where they have been exploring different aspects of post-production work and techniques.
Read on to discover what young filmmakers have been up to during the first half of the autumn term classes at Sparks Film School…
Foley Work: Creating their own Original Sound Effects
One of the areas that the young film crews have been looking into is Foley sound.
Foley artists create bespoke sound effects for a film, recreating lots of different sounds using a mix of materials. For more info on the work of a Foley Artist, take a look here >>
Sparks film students got stuck in creating all kinds of sound effects. They worked with a wide array of unexpected props and materials, recording actions to create some unique sound effects to accompany their short film work.

Editing: Chase Sequences
The young film crews have also explored editing together exciting chase sequences, as a way to look at how sequencing and the use of post-production effects can influence a story.
They explored the different cuts, rhythms and timings, as well as how to include different music to create some dynamic, action-packed chase sequences.

Recording Voice Overs
In a session focused on sound, the film students looked into recording and using voice-overs, taking inspiration from different film examples. The crews explored the advantages and challenges of using voiceover recordings and how they can enhance the story with the use of a voiceover.

After scripting and shooting some short scenes, the crews recorded their own voice overs to add into their scenes in post-production.

Editing: Working with Stock Footage
In a workshop focused on editing techniques, the film crews practised working with stock footage and editing it to suit their own ideas and creative expression.
The crews were tasked with producing their own film trailers, cut together from stock footage choices, with the additions of voice overs, titles, sound effects and music choices.

Pre-Production Activities
Along with exploring these areas of post-production, the film students have also started to develop their main film ideas and have started pre-production work on this term’s featured project.
After half term, the young film crews will continue to explore different post-production techniques and will also work on a ‘main feature’ to showcase their learning and their skills development, and to express their ideas and creativity.
Each term, the students produce a collaborative short film that draws on their creative and technical learning, as well as providing the chance to be creative, to experiment and to apply different techniques.
