Aspiring young filmmakers, brace yourselves for an electrifying challenge!
Sparks Film Schools have partnered up and are joining forces with the renowned BRIT School to offer a spine-tingling opportunity that will have you on the edge of your seat. Together, they are launching a 30-second horror film competition that invites young creatives to flex their filmmaking muscles and showcase their talent in the art of terror, suspense, and storytelling.
Whether you’re a student with a passion for film or just someone who loves a good scare, this competition offers the perfect platform to unleash your creativity. But beware – crafting a truly terrifying horror story in just 30 seconds will require skill, precision, and a flair for the unexpected. So, what makes this competition so exciting, and how can you get involved?
Why a 30-Second Horror Film?
When you think of horror films, you may picture feature-length productions with complex plots and hours of slow-burning tension. But this competition is different. It challenges filmmakers to strip horror down to its essence—finding the perfect balance of suspense, surprise, and storytelling in a fraction of the time. The 30-second time limit forces participants to think creatively and make every second count.
What’s fascinating about this format is that it mimics the fast-paced nature of modern media consumption. From TikTok to Instagram Reels, today’s audiences are primed for short, impactful content. As a filmmaker, being able to deliver a complete narrative within such a limited time frame is an invaluable skill, and this competition offers a unique chance to hone it.
Who Can Enter?
The Sparks Film School and BRIT School competition is open to all young filmmakers between the ages of 14 and 19.
Whether you’re a seasoned filmmaker or a complete beginner, this is your chance to demonstrate your creativity. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to expensive equipment – this competition is all about storytelling, atmosphere, and originality. If you’ve got a smartphone and a passion for filmmaking, you’ve got everything you need to enter.
Both Sparks Film School and the BRIT School are renowned for their dedication to nurturing young talent, making this competition an excellent opportunity to get noticed by industry experts and experienced mentors. Not only could you win exciting prizes, but you’ll also gain invaluable feedback from professionals in the world of film.

With only 30 seconds to work with, every moment counts. Use music, sound effects, and camera angles to create an immediate sense of tension.
End with a Twist
Horror is often about the unexpected. Whether it’s a shocking reveal or a clever twist, aim to leave your audience surprised and unsettled.
Pay Attention to Detail
Even with a limited time frame, lighting, sound, and atmosphere play a critical role in making your film feel polished and professional.
