We are thrilled to announce even more young filmmaker success, as film students from Sparks Film School Cardiff West have won the Best Film Award for the Ewart Parkinson Award in association with Chapter!
We’re delighted to share news of this amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to all the young filmmakers involved!
Best Film Award
Young filmmakers from Sparks Film School Cardiff West produced the film Penny Hall Murders, which was selected as Best Film in the 11-16 category.
The film was produced by students taking part in the Summer Shoots 2024 and has already made waves by winning the award, which is a testimony to the hard work of the young crew members involved.

Penny Hall Murders
The film is set in the old mansion of Penny Hall, and – unsurprisingly, given the title – a murder has occurred. A group of quirky and colourful characters are drawn into the mystery. As they bumble through their investigation, hilarious misunderstandings and comedic mishaps abound. Will they manage to solve the crime?
We spoke to Alyn Luker, one of the directors at Sparks Film School Cardiff West, who told us: “Being Shortlisted for the Ewart Parkinson Award is such an Honour. I’m so proud of our students’ ability to work together to create a wonderful little short film that had us laughing everyday!”

About the Ewart Parkinson Award
Chapter is very pleased to be presenting new awards for the best short films by local filmmakers aged 13-18. All genres and styles are welcome, including fiction, non-fiction, animation and more. The winners received gift voucher prizes and all shortlisted films were shown at a special screening in Chapter Cinema 1.
These awards have been made possible by a donation from the Brainwave Trust, in memory of Ewart Parkinson OBE. Ewart Parkinson was an engineer and Director of Environment and Planning for South Glamorgan County Council who steered through the pedestrianisation of Cardiff City centre and the development of the Bay. He was passionate about supporting creativity and inclusivity in Cardiff and Wales. Our goal with these awards is to encourage and support our next generation of filmmaking talent.
