At Sparks Film School, we aim to ignite a lifelong passion for filmmaking and creative storytelling in every young filmmaker who walks through our doors. One of the questions we hear most often is: “What kind of careers in media exist for young people?”

The answer? The future has never looked brighter. Media and content creation are among the fastest-growing industries worldwide, with a rising demand for skilled, creative professionals across a huge range of roles.

From directing and editing to content creation and digital storytelling, opportunities for careers in media are expanding—and so are the pathways our alumni are taking. (You’ll find more insights and industry trends in our blog archive.)

Careers in Media

So many doors can be opened to young people interested in a careers in media.

To illustrate just a few of the pathways that lead to careers in media, we’re revisiting the journeys of some of our talented alumni, who were once young filmmakers with Sparks Film School. These alumni are making real waves within their chosen fields and building the careers in media they began before they had even left school.

Meet Miro, an Independent Filmmaker and Sparks Film School Alumnus

Miro has been making waves in the film industry ever since leaving Sparks Film School.

After leaving Sparks, Miron went on to study at London Screen Academy which then led to a career working as a screenwriter, editor, and director.

See the full interview with Miro here.

When we asked Miro about how he had approached a future within film after his studies, he said “I went into LSA at 16 and clung to the idea that I would be a writer and director, but I also learned a lot of other skills such as sound mixing, editing, lighting etc. Now I’m in the industry and working mostly as a writer, director, and editor.“

Miro has 4 film credits to his name on IMDB, and has been seeing success at film festivals recently too!

Miro is one of several Sparks Film School Alumnus who have gone on to work as directors or editors in filmmaking, using the practical film production skills they picked up early on in their journey.

Meet Ruby, Director of Photography, Cinematographer and Sparks Film School Alumnus

Sparks Film School Alumnus Ruby was enjoying some great success (along with the necessary hard work) in their career as a cinematographer and director of photography when we last spoke to her. We can see since we chatted to Ruby, they have gone on to work on more projects and continue to grow as a professional filmmaker.

When Ruby moved on from Sparks Film School, they went on to study a joint honours in Film and Theatre at the University of Bristol and then went on to study for an MA in Cinematography at the Met Film School.

When speaking about this experience, Ruby mentioned “I already knew a lot from my time with Sparks, this gave me the chance to learn about the intricacies of the camera and lighting department and all the other roles involved in film. I learnt a lot from my MA as it was so specialised.“

Ruby recently directed and produced the successful music video for ‘Annual Birthday Cry’ by artist Lexie Carroll.

Robin, Film Critic and Screenwriter

A media career definitely doesn’t always mean being in front of or behind the camera on a set!

There are a myriad of ways in which to build a future working in the arts. We talked to our lovely alumni Robin recently, who is now working professionally as a film critic and an aspiring screenwriter.

Robin, after leaving Sparks Film School in 2015, went on to study at The University of Sussex in Film Studies, and then later an MA in Screenwriting at UAL.

Robin’s journey from Sparks has led him to obtain two university degrees and the foundation for a successful career working as a film critic.
