For this autumn term’s filmmaking classes, we’re excited to introduce and explore a brand new theme – Finishing Touches!
In the quest for cinematic glory, what happens on set is only half the battle. This term, we’re looking at what happens next, as we explore all the finishing touches needed to take a bundle of footage and turn it into a masterpiece!
Every term at Sparks Film School’s filmmaking classes, young film students explore a different creative theme, which helps us to introduce a wide variety of different filmmaking techniques and styles, so that over time, filmmakers develop a well-rounded knowledge, understanding and awareness of different filmmaking practices.
Finishing Touches
For the upcoming autumn term, which starts in September, film students will explore the art of construction and learn how to add impactful and meaningful details to the finish of their productions. This will include both production details (e.g. shooting) and post-production (e.g. editing) too.
As part of this term, students taking part in filmmaking classes are set to explore:

Approaches to Post-Production
Film students will explore different approaches towards post-production, where they will cover generalist editing techniques as well as some specialist finishing functions.
Within the filmmaking classes, students will craft their own unique interpretations of group footage. They will learn how to sequence to create different meanings, including how to select and sequence material for dramatic effect.
The Role of Sound
During the autumn term, students will also look at the role of sound during the different phases of filmmaking. We will look at effective ways for recording sound on set, as well as how to add sound in post-production.
Students will explore how to create and record their own Foley sound effects to use in their edits, as well as how they can use sound effects to enhance a film’s soundtrack and methods for dubbing and creating voiceovers.

Scoring
Building on the exploration of sound techniques, this term we will also look at film scoring and how to produce music for their film productions.
Students will take part in musical scoring workshops, with an emphasis on creating their own original music to add into their edits.
Post-Production Effects
Film students will take a look at different post-production effects that can be used to enhance storytelling or to create visual impact. They will take a look at how to use transitions, colour grading, different visual elements and any visual effects within their own work.
Custom Titles & Credit Sequences
Along with other aspects of post-production, filmmaking students will also look at how how they can create compelling and artistic title and credit sequences using a range of different media.
Finishing Touches: Film Production
As will all our filmmaking classes, the upcoming term will be practical and focused around production. We love to use project-based-learning methods in all our classes, as we know it helps to develop robust skills, as well as creativity and independent thinkers.
Filmmaking students will work on their own film projects throughout the term, with practical workshop activities and technical masterclasses built into the programme. They will each have the chance to apply the different skills learnt this term to their own work and will finish the term with a new production to add to their portfolio.
