If you love funny films, YouTube sketches, or making your friends laugh, this is the perfect chance for you to develop your comedy skills and craft your own unique comedy movie.

During February half term, take part in Comedy Cuts: a hands-on filmmaking camp where students learn how comedy works on screen. It’s not magic – it’s technique! As part of a comedy film crew, you’ll also produce your own unique film to showcase your comedy genius and to add to your portfolio.

What you’ll make:

By the end of the half term camp, you’ll have made a finished comedy film from first idea to final edit.

You’ll get to:

  • come up with a comedy concept (and develop it with your crew)
  • write scenes and plan your shoot like a real crew
  • take on real film production crew roles: director, camera, sound, actor and several crew roles
  • shoot your scenes and learn how to get the best takes

Comedy Filmmaking Techniques:

Students will learn how to generate laughs on purpose, and not just “hope the result is funny.”

In interactive workshop sessions, students on this half term camp will explore:

  • Different comedy styles: slapstick, deadpan, parody, sketch, mockumentary, satire (age-appropriate)
  • Setup & Payoff: planting an idea… then surprising your audience
  • Escalation: how to capitalise on a joke (without losing the story)
  • Rule of three: the classic “two normal… one unexpected” pattern
  • Reactions: the secret weapon of comedy
  • Camera-based comedy: how to use reveals, misdirection, framing, perspective and movement to emphasise comedy
  • Sound-based comedy: how to use punchy SFX, awkward silences, contrast, music cues

Real Filmmaking:

Our half term camps aren’t just acting games or the chance to “make a little video.” Students learn how professional film crews actually work, in a way that’s fun, supportive, and age-appropriate.

That means:

  • planning properly in Pre-Production (so your shoot runs smoothly)
  • working as part of a ‘real’ film crew, taking on specific Production responsibilities and working with real filmmaking equipment

Learning is practical and outcome-led, with clear skill progression and a finished film as the end result.

Age Groups:

Comedy Cuts is available for ages 7-11.

Students work in peer age groups so everyone can feel confident and challenged at the right level:

Ages 7-11: Studio 2 / Studio 3

New to filmmaking? We’ll guide you. Already making videos? We’ll help you level up fast.

Course Outcomes:

Students leave with:

  • a finished film to add to portfolios and to share with family and friends
  • more confidence in making films, as well as speaking up, performing, and leading
  • stronger teamwork and creative problem-solving
  • real filmmaking skills and knowledge

Students can expect:

  • small group learning and attentive support
  • industry-experienced instructors with specialist filmmaking knowledge
  • a positive, inclusive and supportive environment
  • access to plenty of filmmaking equipment and a structured workflow
