The Young Filmmakers Lab: Advanced Film Production Summer Course

Sparks Film School Ealing | Ages 14-17

Young Filmmakers Lab is our advanced pre-university filmmaking programme for young people aged 14+. Designed for ambitious young filmmakers who are serious about film and television production, students work with high-end professional equipment while developing advanced creative and technical skills in a real production environment.

Sparks Production Studio is for young creatives who want more than a hobby. It is for those who want to push themselves creatively, collaborate with like-minded filmmakers and develop the confidence, leadership and original thinking that technology and AI cannot replace.

Course Overview and Progression

This advanced-level programme is tailored for those with a keen interest in film. The curriculum focuses on refining existing knowledge and introducing the technical skills required for industry-standard production.

Dates: 10th – 14th August 2026

Times: 10am-4pm each day

Venue: Bolder Academy, Macfarlane Lane, Isleworth, TW7 5DB

Key areas of focus include:

  • Portfolio Development: Participants work towards completing a high-quality short film. This serves as a significant asset for UCAS personal statements and applications to specialist film schools or creative arts universities.

  • Technical Skills Development: Students move beyond the basics to master advanced camera operation, lighting design, and sophisticated editing techniques.

  • Collaborative Practice: The Lab mirrors a professional film set, encouraging students to take on specific crew roles and develop the communication skills necessary for successful creative collaboration.

  • Creative Autonomy: While guided by experienced instructors, filmmakers are encouraged to find their own visual voice and take ownership of their narrative projects.

Preparation for Higher Education

By the conclusion of the Lab, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process from script to screen. The programme is designed not only to improve technical proficiency but also to build the confidence required for further study or entry into the creative industries.
