Read on to find out what skills and techniques we’ll be exploring at Sparks Film School this spring…
Dramatic Tension meets High Stakes Storytelling
Whilst creating their high tension film masterpiece, students will master lots of new professional filmmaking skills as they boost their portfolios and explore lots of new techniques.
Technical Skills
- Cross-cutting between parallel scenes to build tension using dramatic irony
- Trombone shots (dolly zoom) for disorienting, dramatic moments with visual impact
- Hitchcock’s Rule: using frame composition to control what audiences notice and deliver key messages
- Pans and tilt shots for suspenseful reveals
- High and low angles to show power, status and vulnerability
- Quick cuts and rhythmic editing to create pace and urgency
Storytelling Skills
As part of the term, students will work towards creating engaging and dynamic stories onscreen through looking to the film industry’s best and boldest for inspiration and learning.
- Upping the stakes: making failure matter more and more
- The ticking time bomb: when time is running out and everyone knows it
- Changing status: shifting character power during scenes
- Moving the goalposts: achieving one goal only to face an even bigger challenge
Why Stakes Matter?
Understanding dramatic tension isn’t just about making exciting films. It’s about learning how stories work, why we connect with characters, and how creative choices shape emotional experiences.
Sparks Film School students will develop confidence in their technical abilities whilst discovering their voice as storytellers. Every session contributes to their progression through the Sparks curriculum, building skills in cinematography, editing, directing and cinematic storytelling.
Sparks Film School believe an education in media is essential for any child’s development, especially in this media focused world and future.
What Filmmakers will Create
Over the term, students will explore powerful cinematography techniques and storytelling strategies, then put everything into practice by creating their own main film project – an ambitious project that showcases their skill and learning as a filmmaker.
Over the years, Sparks Film School student productions have gone on to be screened and win awards nationally and internationally at major film festivals. See our blog for more of our recent success with films created by our filmmaking students!
