Student Spotlight: Behind the Scenes with Studio 1

For this month’s Student Spotlight, we went behind the scenes with Studio 1 filmmakers busy in the action of making their latest film.

We chatted to Studio 1 filmmakers Emma (7), Alexia (6), and Austin (7) on their thoughts about filmmaking, their journey so far, and their experience of making a film as part of the Summer Shoots.

Hi everyone, it’s great to be on set with you! Why do you all think people should learn about filmmaking?

Alexia (6) – I think people should learn to make films so that they can always have something to watch on TV. If people don’t know how to make films, then we won’t have anything to watch anymore!

Austin (7) – I think people should learn how to make films because it’s really fun and also really educational. When making a film you learn a lot about different techniques and that there is a lot more that goes into making a film than you’d think. Everyone should learn how to make films!

Tell me something you’ve learned this week…

Austin (7) – This week has been really good because I have loved all the filming! I like being on camera because I love playing around with angles and pressing all the different buttons. I also like the acting because you can pretend you are in another world which is really fun. I’ve been learning so much this week.

Emma (7) – This week we have learnt a lot about how to operate the cameras and how to prepare a scene as the assistant director. You need to prep the set by calling out ‘Quiet on set, roll cameras, action!’. We’ve also created some props for the film by using arts and crafts which have been really great.

How does filmmaking make you feel?

Emma (7) – This week has made me feel really happy. I have never been to a Sparks camp before, but I love acting, singing, and dancing. I also really enjoy talking to a group of people so I found it really exciting when learning how to shoot a scene as a director. I have also made lots of friends which has made me feel really happy too.

Can you describe your experience here this week?

Alexia (6) – It’s been really fun. We have got to dress up and bring costumes in and make props for the film. We also made a big magical ice cream for the end scene in the film where they have a big party!

What piece of advice might you have for new and fellow filmmakers?

Alexia (6) – Don’t be afraid to make friends. If someone is shy and looks like they are alone, you can go and ask them if they might want to play with you on break-time!

Emma (7) – I would say if you are scared that you won’t have any friends or the teachers might not be fun, the teachers are actually really nice and kind. And I have made friends really easily this week. The summer camp is also really fun and playful with loads to do.

Austin (7) – My advice would be when you are filming, always keep the camera straight! Also always be quiet when someone is filming because if you are talking during a take the camera will pick it up and you might need to reshoot the scene.

Thanks so much to the Studio 1 filmmakers for sharing their insights and experiences! It was great to see them work on their film with the rest of their crew and show so much creativity and imagination!
