This summer, students taking part in the Summer Shoots 2024 are set to explore The Element of Surprise – a brand new creative theme to inspire ideas, imaginations and surprising new film productions throughout the summer holidays.
Within the new theme, we are aiming to create films that surprise, amaze and intrigue audiences!
Summer Camp Themes
Each year, we introduce an exciting new theme, full of creative potential and featuring a brand new set of challenges to inspire the young filmmakers taking part.
The themes are designed to inspire creative ideas, to introduce a wealth of filmmaking techniques and to challenge filmmakers to expand their existing knowledge.
The Element of Surprise
This year’s theme – The Element of Surprise – is all about how filmmakers can keep audiences and characters guessing. It hopes to see audiences on the edge of their seats and gripped to the action!
Collectively, the young filmmakers involved in making Summer Shoots productions will explore lots of different techniques to keep things fresh, original, mysterious, intriguing and unpredictable.
Some of the techniques they will explore together include…
Invisible Cuts
As part of the Summer Shoots 2024, filmmakers taking part will explore how to create different types of invisible cuts and how make two shots appear to be one.
Match Cuts and Jump Cuts
Filmmakers will also investigate how they can use both match cuts and jump cuts to create visual and narrative surprises.
Magical Powers using Special FX
In our younger studios, Summer Shoot filmmakers will practise using green screens and creative camera tips and tricks to bestow magical powers on their characters.
Plot Twists
Another technique up for exploration as part of this year’s Summer Shoots is how to use plot twists and how to use foreshadowing as a storytelling technique.
Film within a Film Stories
Young filmmakers taking part in the Summer Shoots summer camps will explore how to create a film within a film narrative, where something unexpected happens, and they can also show you how its done!
Surprising Animations
Young animators taking part in Animation summer camps are set to explore how to create visual surprises using object manipulation, graphic matches and hidden layers.
The Trombone Shot (Dolly Zoom)
One of the hardest – and most satisfying – shots to execute, filmmakers will attempt the trombone shot to create surprising visual feasts for the audience to enjoy.
The Underdog
Everyone loves an underdog! As part of this year’s Summer Shoots, young filmmakers will explore and craft their own underdog stories, full of unlikely and uplifting encounters.
These are just some of the new techniques that will be introduced this summer, as the young crews embark on their creative movie making adventures.
The young filmmakers will use their thematic explorations to inform their filmmaking journeys and their productions. Over the course of each summer camp, the young crews will produce their own unique film production from start to finish.
Summer Camps 2024
